GameStop Under Fire After Classing Itself ‘Essential Retail’

GameStop is facing the wrath of the internet after a leaked staff memo on the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic made its way online. While the general advice being given is to begin social distancing and self-isolation where possible, GameStop doesn’t seem to be taking the threats seriously.

Kotaku has revealed a memo reportedly sent to staff which claims the stores are “essential retail” and that business should continue as normal – despite advice to the contrary.

The memo reads: “Due to the products we carry that enable and enhance our customers’ experience in working from home, we believe GameStop is classified as essential retail and therefore is able to remain open during this time,

“We have received reports of local authorities visiting stores in an attempt to enforce closure despite our classification. Store Managers are approved to provide the document linked below to law enforcement as needed.”

Kotaku also adds that the staff memo “encourages police officers to call GameStop’s corporate headquarters if they have a problem with this policy.”

The news has been met with heavy criticism online, with many condemning the struggling stores for not taking their employees’ health and safety seriously.

One user tweeted: “Hey gamestop. Close your f*cking stores. What do you sell that’s essential? Used copies if madden 09? A rick and Morty figurine?

“The fact that you are no longer essential is why your stock is in the dumps. Also cause of sh*t like REFUSING TO CLOSE DURING A PANDEMIC.”

Meanwhile, stores including The Disney Store, The LEGO Store and Lush have all closed their doors in the interest of public health and safety.
