George R. R. Martin has taken to his blog to talk a little bit about his involvement in Elden Ring.
One of the earliest details we knew about since before Elden Ring’s announcement was that fantasy book author George R. R. Martin had a role in the game. Before it was announced, Martin had said he had consulted on a Japanese game, which of course did turn out to be Elden Ring.
Up to now, how he actually worked on the game has not been entirely clear. According to Martin himself, it was mostly about world building. “A few years back, Hidetaka Miyazaki and his incredible team of game designers, the creators of the DARK SOULS videogame series, reached out from Japan to ask me to help them create the backstory and history for a new game they were working on,” said Martin in his blog post.
“What they wanted from me was just a bit of worldbuilding: a deep, dark, resonant world to serve as a foundation for the game they planned to create. And as it happens, I love creating worlds and writing imaginary history.”
So it seems that Martin was mostly a consultant and world builder for Elden Ring above all else. This isn’t too surprising, as Martin himself notes “video games are not really,” his thing. It also sounds like a lot of his work started at the beginning of development.
“So I did my bit, and handed off to my new friends in Japan, and they took it from there. And years passed,” writes Martin. From the sounds of it, Martin built an idea of what the world is like, and let FromSoftware fill in the blanks.
Martin also seems to be in the long line of people who think the game looks great, finishing his post by saying, “And I’ve got to say, it looks incredible.” You and us both.
