Gina Carano, known for playing Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, has been fired from the Star Wars franchise according to Lucasfilm.
Carano has previously expressed transphobic opinions on social media, engaged in antisemitism and even contributed to the denial of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic [via ComicBook].
A spokesperson from Lucasfilm confirmed the decision via a statement on Wednesday night.
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
The news is sure to please Star Wars fans and campaigners alike. Viewers have been pushing for action using the #FireGinaCarano hashtag across social media.
The actor’s opinions appear to be in complete contrast to the likes of Pedro Pascal, who plays The Mandalorian’s titular warrior. The Spanish actor has expressed his support of trans rights on Twitter in the past, in spite of any colleague opinions.
Pascal’s actor sibling, Lux Pascal, also recently came out as trans via the cover of Chilean magazine “Revista Ya”. The Mandalorian actor then expressed how proud he was of his trans sister, posting a screenshot of the mag with the caption “my sister, my heart, our Lux.” [via Out.com].
While it’s not clear if Cara Dune will reappear as a Star Wars character in the future, it looks like Gina Carano will never set foot on a Star Wars set again. With any luck, we’ll hopefully see more swift action across the TV and film industry as a whole when it comes to discrimination and harmful viewpoints.
