Google has announced that it plans to close its two in-house Stadia-exclusive game studios, a move that will impact 150 developers working there.
Google’s cloud-gaming venture didn’t get off to the bests of starts. From broken launch promises to an unfavourable subscription model, the whole thing failed to appeal to gamers in the way the company had hoped. Now it seems that Google is set to rethink its whole strategy, which includes shutting down its own first-party games operations [via Kotaku].
The announcement was made via a press release on Google’s “product updates” page, which includes the following statement in regards to Stadia’s future:
“Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games. With the increased focus on using our technology platform for industry partners, Jade Raymond has decided to leave Google to pursue other opportunities.”
One Kotaku source familiar with Stadia’s operations told the publication: “Google was a terrible place to make games. Imagine Amazon, but under-resourced.”
So, what does this mean for Stadia? Well, it sounds like Google is taking a backseat in regards to what games actually come to the platform. While this doesn’t mean that Stadia is ready to bow out just yet, it does leave its fate in the hands of third-party support. Whether or not players will still be attracted to the services now that there are no exclusives is yet to be seen.
Regardless of what happens to Stadia, this decision is a blow to the industry. Despite any scepticism, the future of many jobs at Stadia is now at stake. Hopefully those out of a job will find work soon.
