GTA Trilogy Physical Release Requires Extra Download On Switch

It appears that the GTA: The Trilogy physical version for Nintendo Switch will require an additional download.

The box art has been shown off in full on Target’s website (thanks, TheGamer), showing a box at the bottom that reads “Download required. See back.” Rockstar haven’t made any announcements regarding the need for a download on Switch. It’s not exactly clear whether you’ll need to download any of the games in full, but either way it’s a nuisance.

It’s likely that a download for the GTA: The Trilogy physical version is needed because of the size of cartridge they’re using. Switch cartridges come in a variety of sizes, as small as 1GB all the way up to 32GB. GTA: The Trilogy is apparently 25.4GB in size, so one could assume it could easily fit on the biggest cartridge. The problem is, bigger cartridges cost more, so digital downloads act as a way to reduce costs.

We saw the same thing with the Switch release of the Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, with that requiring an 8.7GB download. There’s an argument to be made with The Witcher 3 release on Switch proving that GTA: The Trilogy could fit on the cartridge, but the former did see a significant graphical downgrade.

Ultimately, the biggest problem is that it takes up room on the Switch’s limited space. It means people need to buy a micro SD in order to have any games on there at all. With GTA: The Trilogy costing as much as a modern release, the least they could do is make it fit on a cartridge.
