It’s that time before a new console generation when slow bits of details begin to drop. People cling to any kind of news they can. “SHOW US THE NEW GENERATION!” they yell… which Microsoft and Sony are slowly doing.

Sony today revealed the first look and details of the PlayStation 5 controller today. Its name? The DualSense. Over on the PlayStation blog they say it will “bring the sense of touch to PS5 gameplay”… which is kind of a weird thing to say but whatever.

The new controller is at its final design and is now being shipped to developers. This will help them figure out how to use it with their games. In the blog they promise that it will deliver a new feeling of immersion to players but what does that actually feel like?

Apparently it feels like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on the L2 and R2 buttons to really help you feel the tension. Haptic feedback is that feeling of vibration you get when using your phone or current game controllers. The Nintendo Switch pushed it quite far with HD Rumble and it seems that PlayStation are hoping to push it even further.

The share button has been replaced with a “create” button. This means there will probably be even more ways to share your content on the PS5. We’ll have to wait until closer to launch to find out though.

The light bar has moved to either side of the touch pad, which does remain from the DualShock 4. The main thing that stands out though is how it looks. The two tone black and white is a very different look to how PlayStation’s default controllers look but it seems to work!

The blog post ends with a message from Jim Ryan mentioning the 2020 Holiday launch for the PlayStation 5 too. Hopefully this means 2020 is still when we’ll be getting our hands on Sony’s next generation console. What do you think of the DualSense? Let us know and make sure to read about all the features over on PlayStation blog!
