Hi-Fi Rush from Shinji Mikami is very different and it’s out now

Hi-Fi RUSH is the new game from Shinji Mikami is not what you’d expect from the developer, and it’s not now.

Shinji Mikami is a horror legend, so Hi-Fi RUSH is certainly a change of pace. Mikami not only played a huge role in the creation of Resident Evil, but under his Tango Gameworks studio, he’s also responsible for The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

Now for something a little different

What’s more, back in March 2022, Shinji Mikami said that his studio was working on a new non-horror-related Xbox exclusive. In fact, Mikami also said that the mystery game was the “complete opposite” of what some fans might expect. So it seems that the mystery game was Hi-Fi RUSH.

Hi-Fi RUSH was announced during this week’s Xbox Developer Direct event. The game kinda looks like what would happen if Jet Set Radio, Sunset Overdrive and Metal Hellsinger had a baby. Simply put, Hi-Fi RUSH is an action-rhythm game with gorgeous, eye-popping, cel-shaded visuals.

Hi-Fi RUSH also looks to have a hint of PlatinumGames hack-and-slash gameplay. However, to have maximum impact on your enemies, combat sequences can be perfectly aligned with the rhythm of the in-game music to amplify player attacks.

In terms of story, players will take control of Chai, who is said to be: “a free-spirited slacker with rockstar ambitions. During a technological procedure to receive a robotic arm, he finds an unexpected “bonus” when his music player is fused within his power unit. If that wasn’t enough, the company behind the experiment labels him a “defect,” making him a target for deactivation.

With a squad of corporate overlords and an army of robots after him, Chai must defend himself through rhythmic combat and the help of a motley crew of allies to take down the company’s ruthless business leaders and escape.

What’s more, Hi-Fi RUSH will feature an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack featuring rock bands such as Nine Inch Nails, The Black Keys and more.
