No free upgrade for Standard or Special Edition

Horizon Forbidden West Doesn’t Have A Free PS5 Upgrade

It has been revealed that the Horizon Forbidden West standard edition and special edition for PS4 will not include a free upgrade to PS5.

Yesterday as detailed on the PlayStation Blog, five versions of the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel were announced. The standard, Digital Deluxe, Special Edition, Collector’s Edition, and the Regalla Edition.

Most Sony first-party games such as Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut as well as the upcoming Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, offer a clear path to upgrade from PS4 to PS5.

There’s no free new-gen upgrade

However, that is not the case with Horizon Forbidden West. The only way to gain “Dual Entitlement” is to buy the £79.99 Digital Deluxe, the £169.99 Collector’s Edition or the £229.99 Regalla Edition.

So, if you bought the standard or Special Edition (physical or digital), you will get no PS5 upgrade included. Sony is not even offering a £10/$10 upgrade cost, like other first-party titles.

There’s not even a new-gen upgrade cost

I find this a little odd, as there only seems to be a price difference of £10 between the PS4 and PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West. So why aren’t Sony at the very least offering an upgrade path at an additional cost? We’re not sure.

Sony could of course make a U-turn on this decision, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Even on the pre-order support FAQ page, it reads: “there are no plans for an update offer” at this time.

It may be best to future proof yourself

Whether you own a PS5 or not, it seems that you might be safe future-proofing yourself by purchasing Horizon Forbidden West with PS4/PS5 Dual Entitlement. Not to sound sceptical, but is this Sony’s intention?

You can of course play your PS4 copy of Horizon Forbidden West on PS5 via backward compatibility. However, it will be without the snazzy haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support, and more.
