On-set photos for Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon confirm that filming has begun in Cornwall, England [via Daily Mail].
Casting for the Game of Thrones prequel ‘House of the Dragon’ actually began in 2020. However, as with most forms of entertainment, production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What Do We Know About The Game of Thrones Prequel?
The on-set photos show Targaryen duo Prince Daemon and Princess Rhaenyra, played by Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy respectively. We can spot them chatting away on a Cornwall beach.
Both Matt Smith (Doctor Who, Morbius) and Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust, Truth Seekers) were wearing outfits befitting royalty, with a black and red colour scheme. Eagle-eyed fans have suggested that the colour scheme resembles the colours of House Targaryen.
House of the Dragon is a 10-episode series. It is set 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones. The spin-off will tell the origins story of House Targaryen, as well as other houses, and how King’s Landing came to be.
The HBO series has a star-studded casting, it’s not just Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy! Stars such as Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One, Bates Motel), Paddy Considine (The Outsider, Peaky Blinders), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Amazing Spider-Man) and more have already been confirmed for the show.
The original Game of Thrones show ended in 2019. It was one of the most expensive and critically acclaimed TV series of all time. However, the less said about that final season, the better.
House of the Dragon is based upon the George RR Martin novel, Fire and Blood. Ryan Condal (Rampage, Colony) will be the series showrunner. He will work alongside director Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones, Altered Carbon).
Now that filming has officially started, House of the Dragon should all be set to release in 2022. Provided, of course, there are no further global pandemic interruptions!
