It’s Official – Facebook’s New Name Is ‘Meta’

Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company of Facebook will now be known by a new name – Meta.

The founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, hosted a Facebook Connect event last night. In the presentation, the CEO revealed that the company is adopting the new name of Meta, effective immediately. This is supposedly to separate the company from its perception as ‘just a social media company’.

“We’re now looking at and reporting on our businesses as two different segments. One for our family of apps and one for our work on future platforms. As part of this, it is time for us to adopt a new company brand to encompass everything that we do,” Zuckerberg explains.

“To reflect who we are and what we hope to build, I am proud to announce that, starting today, our company is now ‘Meta’”

While the company name of Facebook is changing to Meta, the name of its apps are remaining the same. Facebook operates the titan social media platform, as well as Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus. All of these apps and services will retain their current branding – you’ll still be using the same apps and websites. I’m glad, because I’m sure we all don’t fancy explaining this to our grandparents.

Speaking of Oculus, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has just been announced to come to the VR platform.

Zuckerberg wants to build a ‘metaverse’

Altering a company name isn’t anything abnormal. In fact, it’s something that Google did back in 2015 when it renamed itself to ‘Alphabet’, making itself a subsidiary. However, Lord Zuck made it weird by going on to say that the company has “a new north star: to help bring the metaverse to life.”

I’m sure ‘bringing the metaverse to life’ has some sort of deeper meaning within the tech industry. However, it sounds like a far worse ripoff of a superhero cinematic universe.
