Joker Sequel Has Been Officially Announced By Studio

EDIT: 21/11/2019 Since the time of writing, Deadline is now reporting that this claim is false. The website states: “at this point there are no deals for a sequel, nor even any negotiations.” Original story to follow:

We’ve been speculating on it for a while, but it seems that a sequel to the mammothly-successful Joker movie is officially on the cards. Hooray!

As a runaway success of 2019, Todd Phillips’ psychological thriller has gone on to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time and beat previous record holders like Deadpool 2 and It.

The movie gave a deep dive into the warped psyche of Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and wowed with its intelligent subject matter and gentle handling of mental health.

While Joker‘s ending left fans with more questions than answers, it looks like these could be wrapped up in a neat bow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips and Phoenix have signed on for Joker 2.

The site explains: “Warners has sequel options in place for Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, who has emerged as a strong contender in the Oscar best actor race. The studio and Phillips’ reps at CAA declined to comment.”

Earlier this year, Joaquin Phoenix begged Todd Phillips to write another outing for Arthur Fleck. Although following in the footsteps of Heath Ledger was never going to be easy, 2019’s Joker somehow managed to surpass all expectations.

With Phillips and Phoenix offering a very different take on the Clown Prince of Crime, Joker was a Batman movie without the Dark Knight himself. Phillip has always maintained it would be a single standalone outing for Phoenix’s sympathetic psycho, but all that could be about to change.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Phoenix opened up about the possibility of a Joker sequel:

“Long before the release or before we had any idea if it would be successful, we talked about sequels. In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, ‘Todd, can you start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore.’

He added, “It was kind of in jest — but not really”.

Well, it’s happening!
