If you were curious about whether you can change the fate of certain characters in The Last of Us Part 2, one fan used mods to find out.
There will be some spoilers for the plot and ending in this one so be careful!
We’ve all been in that position where there’s a scripted sequence in a game and we do everything in our power to change it. But because it’s scripted, we just can’t change it. Well, thanks to the power of mods, YouTuber Speclizer is able to find out if we can change things, at least for The Last of Us Part 2.
what can be changed?
Right off the bat, Speclizer asks whether we can kill Abby in the very final fight of the game. Starting off with a gun, Speclizer shoots at Abby for a while, and while there are animations of Abby reacting to it, she doesn’t die. She also doesn’t die from getting a massive axe in the back or chest either.
Of course, one of the other big questions players might face is ‘can you save Joel?’ Which is unfortunately capped off pretty quickly with a sad “you can’t save Joel :(.” No changing the story that drastically. It also seems like Abby is unable to kill both Tommy and Ellie at various points in the game.
Interestingly though, you can kill Owen and Mel before you enter the room where Ellie meets them. That one mostly just involves moving through the door using mods so the scene isn’t triggered. But it was interesting that their models have an instance where they can die. Though they do respawn if you go back and trigger the cutscene.
