The Last of Us remake was seemingly created partly due to the upcoming HBO series. However, it wasn’t the sole reason for its creation.
Prior to its release, many have suspected that one of the main reasons why Sony and Naughty Dog released The Last of Us: Part 1, was largely due to the upcoming adaptation from HBO. Well, it seems at least some of those suspicions have been confirmed by Sony.
We’ve got three Last of Us 1 games!
When the original The Last of Us was released for PS3 in 2013, it pushed the console to its absolute limits during the dying days of its lifespan. This is why a year later, Naughty Dog released a remastered port in 2014 for PS4.
However, more questions were asked when the PS5 remake was announced. Especially when to this day, the PS4 port still looks and plays great. Not to mention it had the criminally underrated Factions multiplayer mode, a feature that is missing in the remake.
Did the HBO series inspire the remake?
However, when speaking to Axios, head of PlayStation Studios, Herman Hulst said that The Last of Us TV series adaptation was “not the sole reason or maybe not even the main reason” for its existence. Reading between the lines, it seems at least on some level, the HBO series was a motivation behind the remake.
However, even if Hulst plays down speculation that the remake was motivated by the upcoming HBO series, the PlayStation Studios boss did also say that it would be the “Holy Grail” to see both releases coincide.

In our review of The Last of Us: Part 1, we said it’s: “a game that doesn’t feel like it needs to exist, but I’m glad it does. Even though that outdated 2013 design still bleeds through, the visual upgrades, combat tweaks and accessibility improvements makes it feel like a brand new title.”
