If David Attenborough has taught me anything, it’s that the animal kingdom is a ruthless realm filled with predators. While nature programs have prepared us for the harsh realities of wildlife, the same can’t be said for the world of Pokemon, which features creatures that seem to live exclusively off of Brock’s rice balls. Well, brace yourselves, as a new trailer for the upcoming New Pokemon Snap gives us a glimpse into the harsh realities of being a Pokemon prey [via Comicbook].

In the new trailer, we see everyone’s favourite fish, Magikarp, being snatched from its natural habitat by both a Pidgeot and Frillish.
While we don’t actually get to see what happens to the derpy water Pokemon, it’s easy to imagine where it’s being dragged off to. Plus it kind of looks like it’s getting eaten. Just saying. Check it out in the tweet below.
Just like in real-life nature programs, there’s something harrowing about this clip. It gives you a sinking feeling in your chest, one that alerts you to the cruel nature of the food chain.
Let’s face it, as a show, Pokemon is slightly fictitious when it comes to mortality. Even the possibility of a fatality in the anime is kept to a minimum and is rarely caused by another Pokemon.

That being said, the very first episode of Pokemon does feature a ferocious flock of Spearow trying to decimate Ash and Pikachu. We also see that scarring episode in which Charmander’s flame nearly goes out. However, the point is that anything that suggests the morality of Pokemon is sort of sidestepped in both the anime and the games.
So, what does this new trailer mean? Well, it could mean that Ash and Brock’s fantasies in the anime are true, which means Magikarp is a delicacy.

It could also just be the usual kind of gag the series likes to throw at us. Typically speaking, a clip like this from a Pokemon entity would usually end with the Magikarp transforming into Gyarados, which is sure to give the trailer’s hungry Pokemon a bit of a shock.
Anyway, in a world without ordinary farm animals, I’d love to know what the citizens of the world of Pokemon are actually eating (hopefully, it’s Quorn).
New Pokemon Snap comes to Nintendo Switch April 30th, 2021.
