Lara Croft has been around the block. From Hollywood blockbusters to ’90s Lucozade adverts, the adventurer has some experience under her belt outside of pillaging caverns. Now the gunslinging galavanting tomb raider is heading to pastures new, as the star of her own anime series on Netflix.

That’s right, Tomb Raider is going to become an animated Netflix original, picking up where the reboot games left off. The news was confirmed by the official NXonNetflix Twitter account, which stated the following:
“The most iconic heroine in video games is jumping to animation! Tomb Raider is a new anime series from @Legendary following Lara Croft after the events of the video-game reboot trilogy.”
Lara’s story left off back in 2018 with Square Enix’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. That same year, Lara found herself on the big screen once again with Tomb Raider (2018), a film that loosely followed the story of the first rebooted game.
It’s not just Lara who’s getting to make her anime debut. Everyone’s favourite 50-foot friend Kong is also being given the spin-off treatment. Netflix confirmed a Skull Island series set in the Monsterverse is coming.
“A shipwrecked crew, an island of monsters, and one king to rule them all. Skull Island is a new anime series set in @Legendary’s Monsterverse from @PowerhouseAnim,” said Netflix.
The show will apparently follow on from the upcoming Godzilla Vs Kong flick, which looks to be something special in itself. Watch the movie trailer here!
Lara’s adventures are to be written by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja), while Skull Island is being handled by Brian Duffield, known for the Netflix spoof The Babysitter. Both projects are to be handled by Powerhouse Animation, the studio behind the Castlevania Netflix series and the recent Blood of Zeus.
If Powerhouse’s previous outings are anything to go by, we’re in for something special. Hopefully, we get to see Lara and Kong being given the same level of attention as Castlevania, with its outstanding visuals and remarkably good writing.

While anime isn’t for everyone, transforming these iconic characters is sure to open the door wide to those who haven’t indulged in the medium before.
Are you looking forward to the Tomb Raider Netflix anime or this is a misstep for our hero?
