Nintendo has announced Game Builder Garage, a brand new tool/game that makes game development more accessible – essentially, it’ll teach you how to make your own games.
The game was announced via Nintendo’s official Twitter account, alongside a short trailer that demonstrates the tool’s colourful UI and premise:
“Learn to make games from the minds at Nintendo! Build your own games from the ground up with the colorful and quirky Nodon when #GameBuilderGarage comes to #NintendoSwitch on June 11!”
Described as “programming made fun”, Game Builder Garage’s eShop page also provides more information on why the application is an effective learning tool:
“Have you ever dreamed of building your own video games? The Game Builder Garage™ software is a great place to start! Anyone can learn the basics of game design and visual programming with step-by-step lessons created by the minds at Nintendo.”
In a sense, creating games in Game Builder Garage looks to be a game in itself. Game Garage Builder uses screens that almost look like an animated factory, filled with tiny creatures called Nodons.
The game’s colourful mascots essentially replace the need to learn code or deal with 3D models, which makes creating games more accessible. Game Garage Builder is more than just a level creator, as it also teaches aspiring developers game creation concepts, which can be further expanded upon.
Just like with Super Mario Maker, players can also share their creations with other players. Game Builder Garage’s sharing functionality won’t just act as a creative hub, but it’ll also allow players to collaborate on projects while looking at the mechanics behind other people’s creations.
According to the official Nintendo website, the game will also be compatible with a USB mouse. This means players will be able to connect a standard mouse to the Switch. Gamers will be able to create games with ease instead of constantly using a gamepad to navigate the game’s UI.
