Nintendo Hints At Zelda Being A Future Playable Character

With Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom finally out to the world, talk has already turned to the future of the franchise.

Despite the entire series being named after her, Zelda has often been a secondary character in the franchise. There have been some rare occasions when she has been a playable character such as in spin-offs Hyrule Warriors, Cadence of Hyrule and Age of Calamity. However, in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the action is usually handed over to Link.

Nintendo Hints At Zelda Being A Future Playable Character

Thanks to an interview with Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma for Vanity Fair, we have learned some more about Zelda’s future in the franchise.

“We feel like what takes most priority is this idea of gameplay. If it turns out that the particular gameplay we’re trying to bring to fruition would be best served by having Zelda take that role, then it’s possible that that could be a direction we could take,” Aonuma says.

“With that said, of course, because we are not sure what the next gameplay experience is going to be, we can’t say what Zelda’s next step is going to be.”

Although this isn’t a direct confirmation of Zelda becoming a playable character, it is at least reassuring to know Nintendo is willing to take this leap. With Link offering a more silent combative approach, it will be interesting to see which gameplay would best suit Zelda. Even having some of the game switch to her POV when her and Link are separated would be interesting to see.
