Nintendo Switch Now Has The Funimation App

The Nintendo Switch is a versatile device. However, when it comes to entertainment, the Switch’s capabilities are somewhat sparse. Well, fear not, as the Switch now has access to the anime streaming service, Funimation!

Before you get too excited, it’s no Netflix or Amazon Prime, however, the addition of Funimation is sure to please anime fans!

Not only is this app the first streaming service to actually make its way to the Switch, but it’s also getting it ahead of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you’re into anime, then you’re likely already aware of the numerous shows available through Funimation, like My Hero Academia and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

While the Funimation app does cater to a niche audience, it could be a sign that Nintendo is open to streaming services on its console. The likes of the Wii and Wii U previously featured apps like Netflix, but support for such services has fallen by the wayside.

Back in January, Nintendo announced that it’s discontinuing the 3DS and Wii U versions of Netflix. The app was delisted from the eShop back in December, while existing users will still have access to the service until the 30th of July 2021.

It’s worth mentioning that the Switch does have a Hulu app, but it’s only accessible to users in the U.S. The Funimation app, however, will only be available for Switch owners in the UK [via Eurogamer].

Nintendo’s interest in streaming services seems half-baked at the moment, so it could be some time before we see support for apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime. That being said, the addition of the Funimation app on Nintendo Switch is a step in the right direction. The anime streaming service is bound to be popular amongst Nintendo fans, so perhaps its reception will facilitate more streaming apps in the future.
