The original model of the Nintendo Switch has received a price cut in the UK and Europe of £20.
Originally launched in 2017, the base model of the Nintendo Switch used to cost £279.99 in the UK and Europe. It now retails for the new price of £259.99. According to Eurogamer, this is to reflect fluctuating currency exchange rates and the fast approaching Switch OLED launch.
The price of the Switch Lite and Switch OLED are affected. A Lite model will still set you back £199.99, while the OLED model is set to launch at £309.99. The new price point splits the hardware line-up much more evenly. Previously, only £30 would have separated the new OLED model from the original base model of Nintendo Switch.
90 million units of the Nintendo Switch had been sold worldwide in June of this year, according to Nintendo Life. This means the Switch has outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360. It’s coming up on the Nintendo Wii, the company’s most successful platform so far.
New model of Nintendo Switch coming soon
The Nintendo Switch flew off the shelves at the start of the pandemic – with some shops completely selling out. Sales have now started to slow, but a new model of Switch with an OLED screen is due out on 8 October 2021. Nintendo wrote this about the new model:
“Nintendo Switch – OLED Model includes a vibrant 7-inch OLED screen with a slimmer bezel. The large screen’s vivid colours and high contrast deliver a rich handheld and tabletop gaming experience, bringing games to life whether you’re racing at top speed or squaring off against enemies.”
