Bloodborne Similarities Weren’t Intentional, Says ‘Lies Of P’ Dev

In a recent interview with Kotaku, the developers of Lies of P, the Pinocchio Soulslike game that looks similar to Bloodborne, said it wasn’t directly inspired by the FromSoftware masterpiece.

The Pinocchio-oriented Lies of P was announced earlier this year, developed by Korean studio Round8. It certainly looks like and seems like it plays like Bloodborne, but according to Round8 that wasn’t on purpose.

“Though we’re greatly honored that many players felt the ‘Bloodborne vibe’ through our trailer release, it definitely wasn’t intentional,” says Ji-won Choi, lead producer at Neowiz, publisher of Lies of P, through an email to Kotaku. “Still, Bloodborne and other Soulslike titles are certainly inspirational, and almost everyone in our team is a hardcore Souls-like fan.”

Apparently the main way Lies of P was inspired by Bloodborne and Dark Souls developer FromSoftware was because of its “high level of craftsmanship,” with the way the Souls games convey movement in particular.

That isn’t to say there aren’t some direct inspirations from the Souls games. Choi said that there will be a checkpoint system similar to bonfires, but mostly has original mechanics otherwise. “We would say Lies of P is most Souls-like in aspects of death penalty and difficulty level.”

Kotaku was also told that the concept and setting were set in stone a year and a half ago. And development began shortly after that, with base content being 50% done, and being 30% finished overall. Lies of P will apparently have a weapon-building system, which the combat is based around. You’ll be able to mix and match blades and hilts for different stats, with Choi promising over 30 base weapons that you can do so with.

For anyone wondering if there will be a mechanic involving Pinocchio’s nose growing, sorry to say there currently isn’t. “We decided against allowing Pinocchio’s nose to grow because we wanted to make him look cool (as opposed to silly),” said Choi. “But we do want to implement the idea somewhere. We can’t say we have any solid plans at this point.”

Lies of P is set to release in 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Will you be getting the Pinocchio soulslike? Let us know on our social channels.
