Details on the actual launch of the PlayStation 5 are thin on the ground right now, but a new leak suggests that pre-orders for the console will be limited to one per household.
The news comes courtesy of Reddit [via Gamesradar] where a dataminer has unearthed some supposed details on the pre-order process for Sony’s next-gen console. As always with leaks and rumours, take the “news” with a pinch of salt for now.
Reddit user Kgarvey trawled through the backend code for PlayStation Direct, Sony’s new hardware commerce site. In the code, the user found some info on how pre-ordering might work, discovering the claim that gamers will be able to “purchase one version of the PS5™ Console: Disc or Digital.”

The Redditor notes that: “An error message that appears if you try to add more than one PS5 console to your cart: ‘You can only purchase one version of the PS5™ Console: Disc or Digital. You have already added one PS5™ console to your cart.'”
This seems to align with previous claims that Sony might struggle to meet demand when the console launches later this year, though it might come as a disappointment for households with multiple gamers, or those looking to pick up both versions of the PS5.

The user also discovered some details on backwards compatibility, something which Sony has so far been pretty vague about. We already know that a lot of PS4 games will be playable on PS5, though that presumably means that the entire back catalogue won’t be.
The Redditor discovered “code for a new label that Sony will attach to PS4 products that are PS5-compatible.”
They explained: “The PS5 Compatible label suggests, once again, that only some PS4 games will be backwards compatible with PS5. This lines up with Sony’s vague messaging about BC. With that being said, the label may be intended for accessories, like controllers and headsets rather than PS4 games, so I might be reading too much into it.”

There’s still no word on when pre-orders will go live, though Sony has stated that we’ll be given plenty of warning to try and secure our orders!
The PlayStation 5 will launch sometime in Holiday 2020, though we’re still waiting on a price and date.
