Sony Says PlayStation Quality Would Fall With Game Pass Style Strategy

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki claims that AAA game quality will deteriorate if an Xbox Game Pass style strategy is adopted.

Sony launches its new three-tier PlayStation Plus subscription model next month. Depending on the tier, subscribers will get access to a plethora of PS4 and PS5 games. Not to mention classic PS1, PSP, PS2 as well as PS3 titles.

Since the new PS Plus model was announced, some fans have questioned its value and content. Though to be fair, many gamers are also happy with what’s potentially on offer. However, much like Xbox Game Pass, Sony fans were hoping to see PlayStation exclusives launch as part of the subscription service.

PS Plus vs Xbox Game Pass!

Back in March this year, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan claimed that the quality of first-party titles would suffer if they launched on PlayStation Plus. However, as reported by Push Square, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Hiroki Totoki has also backed up those claims.

AAA titles on PS5, if we distribute that on subscription services, we may need to shrink the investment needed for that and that will deteriorate the first-party title quality and that is our concern,” said Totoki.

Personally, I’m not sure if I agree with Ryan and Totoki. Though they of course know much more than me. That being said, Xbox Game Pass has shown that you can launch AAA games via a subscription model, and they can still prove to be a success.
