PlayStation Is Set To Have More Exclusives Than Ever Before

The PlayStation 5 will have more exclusives than any other Sony console, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO Jim Ryan [via VGC].

During a conversation with Japanese publication Nikkei, Ryan stated that the company is investing in the PS5’s first-party line-up while boosting its in-house development:

“We have been quietly but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation, and we will make sure that the PS5 generation will have more dedicated software than ever before,”

“We have repeatedly engaged in mergers and acquisitions, including Insomniac Games in the US. We will not rule out that option in the future.”

What Does This Mean For PlayStation 5 Gamers?

Sony’s focus on exclusives is likely in response to Microsoft’s acquisition of various development houses, such as Zenimax Media and Bethesda. While PlayStation’s exclusive lineup has been impressive since the launch of the PS4, Sony seems to be under more pressure than ever to gain console exclusives.

Despite recently closing down Studio Japan, Ryan insists that the company is still committed to catering to the Japanese market:

“We will continue to strengthen our ties with Japanese developers and release content for PS5 that fits the Japanese market.”

Did He Mention The PlayStation 5 Shortages?

The PlayStation boss also addressed the ongoing PS5 shortage and the company’s plans to ramp up production:

“There are several reasons why PS5 was hard to come by. Supply under the new coronavirus was very complicated, and we had to limit distribution to online. The supply and demand for semiconductors is also tight worldwide. We are asking our suppliers to allow us to increase production, which will flow into the market this year.”

Despite releasing late last year, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are still in short supply. As a result, the industry seems to be stuck between generations. Many players are still relying on last-gen hardware. Hopefully, more players will have access to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S as the year progresses. If console supplies remain slim, Sony’s planned exclusives could suffer from poor sales and less exposure.
