Sony has reportedly patented an AI system which will automatically lower the difficulty during some boss fights on PS5.
The AI will recognise when a player is struggling will automatically adjust the difficulty depending on how well the player is doing.
According to SegmentNext, the patent AI will learn “to increase or decrease the level of difficulty in beating a video game opponent,” in-game.
The AI will essentially analyse player data “to identify successful and/or unsuccessful methods” during certain encounters and will adjust accordingly.
If a player is struggling in a game some boss encounters might become a little easier, but if a player is coasting through the game, the boss encounter might become more difficult to test the player.
We have no idea which games this adjusting difficulty AI might be implemented in, but it’s safe to assume that it might be used in console exclusive titles by FromSoftware or the likes of Nioh.
If dynamic difficulty that adjusts depending on the player’s skill level sounds familiar then you’re not mistaken.
2005’s Resident Evil 4 featured a dynamic difficulty that would alter the challenge depending on how the player is performing.
For example if a player in Resident Evil 4 rarely misses a shot and blitzes through enemies, the game will place more enemies in the world, make them more aggressive and able to deal more damage.
However if a player misses loads of shots and takes a lot of damage, the game will place fewer enemies in the game, they’ll miss more shots and deal less damage to the player.
At this time we’re not sure how this Sony patent will be implemented but seeing as it’s only a recent thing, it’s unlikely that we’ll see it utilised anytime soon (if ever!).
