Could Samsung be the company behind the PlayStation 5’s supposedly revolutionary SSD? Well, a new rumour seems to think so, and it’s coming straight from the horse’s mouth.
As spotted by VGC, Samsung has confirmed that a new range of its SSDs will be a part of the next generation of games consoles, which only really points to one thing…
The news comes from the recent expo, the Samsung SSD Forum, which saw senior managing director Han Jinman, announce that the company’s Non-Volatile Memory express SSDs will be appearing in gaming PCs and in “consumer gaming consoles” from 2020.
A slide show was also presented at the event, which seemingly showed off what looked to be a DualShock 4. The company then went on to compare load times between an SSD, a hard drive and the NVMe SSD. According to Samsung, the hard drive is the slowest of these, with an SSD taking just under 30 seconds, and the optimised NVMe taking even less time.
We already know that the next-gen Sony console will be using an SSD to load up games, and the inclusion of what looks like a PlayStation controller in the presentation makes this look suspiciously like a very done deal.
Of course, until we get official word from either company, it’s all just speculation.
In other PS5 news, a new leak has supposedly revealed the price and the release date of the console.
The “news” comes from the same person who accurately leaked the (original) release date for Sony’s The Last of Us Part 2, so it’s definitely someone with at least a little credibility.
First spotted by LetsGoDigital, Twitter user PSErebus has recently been posting their supposed insider info, though of course we don’t know how legit it might be.
According to PSErebus, the PS5 is preparing for a release date of November 20, 2020 and will be priced at $499 USD. This seems like a fairly reasonable price point and date, all things considered, so it’s likely that even if this leak isn’t right on the money, it should be somewhere in the right ball park.
