Resident Evil Village Originally Featured Mermaids As Enemies

Apparently, 2021’s Resident Evil Village was supposed to have scary mermaids, according to an industry insider.

Mermaids are often seen as friendly creatures, especially in the Disney animated universe. However, in other folklore tales, they can be considered to be quite creepy. That being said, in Disney’s live-action Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides, they were certainly no Ariel.

In some ways, I suppose you could consider Moreau of Resident Evil Village to be a mermaid of sorts. Though he’s more of an oversized, slimy blob-thing with loads of creepy eyes. However, if reports are true, mermaids of the horrific variety were planned to feature in Moreau’s section of the game.

As reported by Eurogamer, claims of mermaids being cut from Resident Evil Village were brought to our attention by the industry insider, Dusk Golem. According to the rumours, Moreau’s section was supposed to be much more meaningful, but elements were cut due to budget and time constraints.

These mermaids don’t sound very friendly!

In the water, they could swim for you quickly if [they] spotted you, and you had to get to patches of land or kill them successfully before they reached you,” claimed Dusk Golem.

Dusk Golem even suggests that Moreau’s area would even feature an acid-spitting “Tyrant-like creature,”. It was perhaps assumed that this was going to be Moreau. However, I guess we will never know for sure.

Even on land though they could be annoying and [would] do this screech attack which stunned you and slowed you down for a time. The screeching had a second purpose though, [as] the swamp had a stalker enemy in it.

Stalked by an acid-spitting Tyrant?

Dusk Golem continued: “[This creature had] ‘a giant acid sack around his neck and shoulders,’ and when close, could either spew acid or use a clawed hand it had. The screeching of the mermaid monsters would also attract the stalker enemy [to the player], who by land pathways I guess [this stalker] was the main threat.

In our review of Resident Evil Village, we said it: “provides moments of genuine horror, but will still entice you to come back for more, even if it’s to just be chased by Lady Dimitrescu. To put it simply, barring remakes, Resident Evil Village is the best entry in the series since Resident Evil 4.
