Ryan Reynolds’ next starring role is coming next year and Free Guy is looking like another sure-fire hit for the Hollywood star.
The movie, which is being directed by Shawn Levy, follows Guy, an NPC in a video game which looks a lot like Grand Theft Auto. When Guy breaks the rules and steps out of his role, he finds himself as Player One in his virtual world.
During the movie’s official unveiling at CCXP earlier this month, Ryan Reynolds took the stage to announce that the upcoming film is his favourite-ever role, which is saying quite a lot.
“We really wanted to bring to the world a modern day Back to the Future for modern generations,” Reynolds told the crowd [via IGN].
“Free Guy is my favorite movie I’ve ever made,” he shared, “and that means a lot to me because I made Deadpool.”
And Detective Pikachu. He was in that, don’t forget.
The film’s official description reads as follows: “In Twentieth Century Fox’s epic adventure-comedy “Free Guy,” a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.”
Alongside Ryan Reynolds stars Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect) and Taika Waititi (Thor).
There’s still a bit of a wait until Free Guy hits the cinemas. The movie is set to release across the US on July 3, 2020.
