Smash Mouth Singer Steve Harwell Retiring Due To Health Issues

The lead singer for Smash Mouth, Steve Harwell, has decided to retire after a final show in upstate New York.

There was much speculation online about Smash Mouth after their last gig. Smash Mouth performed at The Big Sip beer and wine festival in Bethel, New York. Harwell’s behaviour seemed off – he was slurring his words and yelling. At times it appeared that he dissociated from his surroundings. Now the singer has decided to retire. In a statement to TMZ, Harwell said:

“Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream. To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.”

As well as suffering from heart problems, Harwell also has Wernicke encephalopathy. This neurological condition can affect speech and movement as well as acute confusion. Sadly, it seems that these conditions have been worsened by a substance abuse issues.

Harwell thanked his fans in his statement:

“To our loyal and amazing fans, thank you, all of this was possible because of you. I’ve tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues, and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn’t able to.”

Smash Mouth’s Legacy

Smash Mouth have had a long career – they’ve been going since the 90s. Many of our readers may have discovered them from the Shrek soundtrack, which includes their biggest hit – All Star. – as well as their cover of I’m a Believer.

Harwell has also done some fun stunts through the years. When challenged by fans to eat 24 eggs in one sitting, Harwell agreed – on the condition that $10,000 was raised for St. Judes Children’s Hospital. The band have also been proud LGBTQ+ allies – celebrating marriage equality in the US and proudly supporting trans rights.

We love to see it. We’re glad to see Harwell prioritising his health. And I might go an rewatch Shrek now.
