Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has had the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie ever, beating out the first film and Detective Pikachu.
It looks like Sonic is doing quite well for himself at the minute, as Variety has reported that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has had an incredible opening weekend. The film took in a massive $71million (£54million) in its American domestic box office debut. That’s certainly nothing to sniff at, and is much higher than other films currently in cinemas.

For example, Michael Bay’s newest film Ambulance only took in $8.7million (£6.6million). Sonic also did better than the first film, which took in $58million (£44million) in its first three days. And Detective Pikachu Pikachu took in $54million (£41million) on its opening weekend in North America.
In the rest of the world, Sonic took in $37million (£28million), bringing the grand total to $141million (£108million). It’s safe to say, Sonic has established itself as a strong live action IP. We already know that a third film, as well as a Knuckles TV show, are on the way. It could be argued that that was jumping the gun a touch, but the proof is in the pudding. People love the blue hedgehog, and if the upcoming Sonic Frontiers reviews well, it will firmly cement Sonic as a good series.
