Sony Isn’t Worried About PS Plus, Despite Drop In Users

Sony says that PS Plus is doing just fine, despite a drop of around 600,000 subscribers ahead of its subscription revamp.

In March of this year, Sony revealed its plans for its revised PlayStation Plus subscription service. The PS revamp will include three tiers, PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Premium.

However, despite Sony’s optimism, the current PlayStation Plus model has taken a huge drop in subscriptions for Q3 and Q4, of the 2021 fiscal year.

As reported by Gamesradar, PlayStation Plus has lost around 600,000 subscribers. Yet, Sony doesn’t see “much concern” and still has “high expectations” for its revamped PS Plus which launches next month.

Should Sony be concerned?

Year on year, there has been a decline, but the stay-home demand was not so strong,” said Sony’s CFO and executive deputy president, Hiroki Totoki during a recent investors report.

Totoki continued: “Compared to that, there’s an increase by 8% quite recently, compared to January and February in 2022. Compared to the end of March in 2020, there’s an increase of 5.9 million subscribers.

The stay-at-home demand was a temporary factor, but after it has subsided, it seems to me that a high level of engagement is maintained. So, on a mid-term basis, I don’t see much concern from PS Plus. I’m sure that the high level of engagement will continue. That’s a positive take that I have.

PS Network users have also dropped

The same report, also revealed that the PlayStation Network saw a drop of around five million users during the same period

Since the reveal of the revised PS Plus subscription service, there have been some fans that have questioned the value of the two top tiers. Though there are some that are happy with its value.
