Sony Could Be Developing 8K Virtual Reality Headset

Sony recently showed off an 8K VR prototype headset, but it’s unlikely to be used in the PSVR 2.

Earlier this year, PlayStation officially revealed a followup to their VR headset, the PSVR 2. Not much was revealed about it at the time, and we still don’t know much about it. We know it will be for the PS5, and it is being referred to as next-gen VR.

Since then, PlayStation has shown off the admittedly weirdly stylish controllers, but we haven’t seen the headset itself. Now, Sony has shown off an 8K VR prototype that will hopefully help with motion sickness.

The prototype is specifically being developed by Sony R&D, not PlayStation. In the demonstration, they showed off a showroom that featured some kind of classic car. The car is incredibly detailed, with the person using the headset to get a close look. You can clearly see fine details in the leather, something that would look great in 8K. Each eye is rendered in 4K, both of them together resulting in 8K.

The video also posits that the headset will be used for things like medical training or live events. Considering this is just a prototype, we can probably assume the technology won’t be used in the PSVR 2. But it certainly paints an impressive picture for the future of VR.

It has been a while since we have heard anything about the PSVR 2. So hopefully PlayStation will be able to give us a closer look sometime soon.
