Sony To ‘Discontinue Some PS4 Models,’ Claims Retailer

According to a Japanese retailer, Sony is reportedly set to discontinue certain models of the PS4 console range.

Back in December of 2020 Sony stated on the PlayStation Direct website that the company no longer plan to stock the PS4 Pro console in the future.

Sony said on the Direct website: “There are currently no plans to restock this item in the future.

Since that time Sony has removed that message, although the console still remains unavailable for purchase.

Despite Sony removing the message it should come as little surprise that at least some models of the PS4 would cease production in the immediate future, especially if outsourced retailers and warehouses across the world already have stock.

Then of course when you consider that the new-gen PlayStation 5 only released in November just gone, it makes further sense why Sony would make such a decision (although the company is yet to officially clarify this news).

Adding speculative fuel to the fire, a Twitter user by the name of Cheesemeister shared a tweet which indicates the story of some PS4 consoles ceasing production could be true.

In an image shared by Cheesemeister, a photo of numerous PS4 consoles can be seen on shelves in Japan with various labels placed on them.

Of course the text is in Japanese but the labels translate to: “Dear customers: due to the manufacturer ending production, the following products will not be restocked.

The PS4 consoles in question include the PS4 500GB Glacier White, PS4 1TB Glacier White, PS4 1TB Jet Black, PS4 2TB Jet Black and the PS4 Pro 1TB Glacier White.

I know this news might disappoint some fans or even parents waiting to pick-up a last gen console for their children on the cheap, but even if Sony is ceasing production of some PS4 consoles, whether it’s via a retailer or independent seller, acquiring a PS4 console should still be easy.

Plus when you consider the short supply of PS5 consoles that still remains an issue, it perhaps gives Sony more time and resources to develop an increased number of new-gen consoles in the immediate future.
