An independent company is selling a PS2-inspired black PS5 console and DualSense controller, but you’ll have to be really lucky to nab one!
At this time the PS5 consoles are only sold by Sony in white, despite players crying out for a black option. Other than the original PS One console, all PlayStation consoles have been black at launch, barring 2020’s PS5.
At the time of writing, Sony has no open plans to release a black PS5 in the immediate future, though I have no doubts it will at some point.
In a way for gamers to acquire a black console of sorts, independent sellers have been selling faceplates and skins to offer a degree of console customisation for PS5 owners.
However these faceplates are not without snags, as one company originally known as PlateStation5 were issued a cease and desist by Sony. Another company has recently challenged Sony to try to stop them from selling faceplates.
Other retailers are taking a slightly different route to selling individual faceplates, instead customising the PS5 consoles themselves (and the DualSense controller) and selling them on for a profit.
One such company is SUP3R5, who will soon be selling a retro-looking black PS5 console inspired by the PlayStation 2. However, you’ll have to be very lucky to get one as stocks are very limited. It’s also important to note the products are not officially endorsed by Sony.
The PS2-inspired design definitely looks pretty sleek, but if you thought getting a regular PS5 was tough, it’s going to be nothing compared to one of these. There will only be 304 console units available – which is a nod to when the PS2 originally released on 03/04/00.
The DualSense controller will have slightly more stock available with 500 units.
Orders for both the black PS5 and the DualSense controller will go live on January 8th at 8pm BST/12pm PT/3pm EST.
However there are some details that any potential customers would need to know. Firstly, the DualSense controller needs to be completely disassembled by the seller with the new shell fitted on. This would void any warranty with Sony. In terms of the retro black PS5, it’s just a case of changing the faceplates and this will not void your warranty with Sony.
The PS5 digital console will sell for $649 and the disc version at $749, while the DualSense controller comes in at $99.
