Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the game’s creative director Brian Horton spoke more about the new Spider-Man game, revealing that Morales will be miles away from the Peter Parker Spider-Man from the 2018 smash-hit game.

He told the publication that the team see Miles as “his own Spider-Man,” and will have his own set of animations, movements and mechanics completely different to those of Peter Parker. Excitingly, Miles will even come with abilities unique to his character, including “bioshock and invisibility.”

Speaking about how the team is approaching the new character, Horton spoke of both of the backstories, noting that where Peter’s origin story “was born out of tragedy,” Miles “is more so born out of family.”

He explained: “What I think is really compelling about Miles as a character is he has friends that he could actually let into his world — his human world and his Spider world. He’s a little different in the way he approaches it.”

In a blog post on the PlayStation website, Insomniac confirmed the game is a standalone expansion, adding that it’s coming Holiday 2020, presumably as a launch title.

Explaining why Miles Morales is the focus of the next game, the company said: “Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world and we wanted to give players a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests across Marvel’s New York City. This had to be a can’t-miss next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.”

As for Peter Parker, he’s safe! And we’ll hopefully be seeing him soon. Insomniac says: “Many of you fans have wondered if Peter Parker is OK. Don’t worry, we still have much of Peter’s story left to tell. But this game is all about Miles, a critical part of our Spider-Man universe, and you won’t want to miss what happens.”
