Square Enix has confirmed plans to reveal “several” new games over the summer, suggesting we’re in for a long, hot one. With no E3 this year, publishers have faced some tough decisions when it comes to revealing their games.

A lot of big names in gaming have started to opt for standalone showcases to announce new games and next-gen news, including Nintendo, PlayStation and even individual games like CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. However, it seems Square Enix has chosen to drip-feed us announcements over July and August rather than devote a live show to their reveal.

During a recent shareholder meeting [via No Investment, No Life/Gematsu], the company explained that the global coronavirus pandemic has put a spanner in the works of their planned game reveals.

“We would normally announce new games at E3,” said an unnamed Square staff member. “We had planned to have a press conference as a replacement event, but were unable to do so since assets were not complete.”

The company went on to add: “We’ll be announcing new titles individually as the timing permits. Several will debut around July to August.”

When it comes to what these mystery projects might be, I have absolutely no idea. We already know that the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake is in the works, so maybe we’ll be seeing an official reveal for that?

Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase, who also served as producer on FF7R, confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the development ream is already hard at work on the sequel.

“Development is already moving forward for the next game in the [Final Fantasy] remake project, ” Kitase told the publication back in April of this year.

The news was met with little fanfare, so maybe we’ll be getting a more official announcement?
