Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s Boring Protagonist Could Have Been An Alien

In a world as rich and diverse as that of Star Wars, it’s pretty disappointing that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order‘s protagonist is as dull as dishwater.

The upcoming new game from Respawn Entertainment stars a brand-new character in Cal Kestis (played by Cameron Monaghan). Kestis ticks all the boxes for traditional male hero: he’s a broody, white, muscled man who wouldn’t look out of place in the next Fast & Furious movie.

But in a world that features everything from Ewoks to slug creatures to the superior race that is the Wookie, why are we getting another bland AF hero?

Speaking with Game Informer, game director Stig Asmussen admitted there were talks about having a more diverse protagonist in the form of an alien, but the idea was scrapped very early on.

“Ultimately we didn’t go with an alien race because we felt like—no pun intended—that would alienate a lot of people,” Asmussen said.

“We wanted to make sure that there was a real human connection to the character that we have in the game, although I personally—I mean, that’s more kind of like [a] broader decision why we did it—personally I think it would be really cool to have an alien protagonist.”

Respawn Entertainment also looked at mixing things up a little by having a female protagonist take the spotlight.

“At the time Rey was kind of the thing for Star Wars, and so it made a lot more sense for us to have a male protagonist,” said Asmussen.

…Because too many female heroes is a bad thing?

Thankfully, the game is looking pretty darn exciting regardless of its uninspired main character. I’ve got faith that Respawn is going to knock this one out of the park, even if it fails to push any boundaries.
