Controversial 2020 hit The Last of Us Part 2 has scored almost as many Game of the Year awards as CD Projekt Red’s beloved The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us Part 2 now has 254 Game of the Year awards, according to gameawards.net.
As spotted by @nextgenplayer, the post-apocalyptic drama now has as many awards as its predecessor, The Last of Us. The PlayStation exclusive is also creeping up on the success of The Witcher 3, with just six awards between the two games.
So far, The Last of Us Part 2 has 54% of the vote, with games like Final Fantasy VII Remake and even Animal Crossing: New Horizons only grabbing around 5%. Fans of the hit roguelike Hades will be pleased to see that it has managed to come second, ahead of even the likes of Cyberpunk 2077.
These awards are granted based on subjective opinion, so it’s important to remember that your opinion might differ from that of the publications making nominations. That being said, it’s great to see the likes of Hades gain more favour over big-budget affairs like Cyberpunk and Ghost of Tsushima.
Coincidentally, both The Last of Us titles currently have the same number of awards, with the first game beating the likes of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Bioshock Infinite back in 2013. The Last of Us Part 2 managed to bag numerous awards at the likes of The Game Awards, including “Best Performance”, which was given to actor Laura Bailey, as well as “Best Narrative” and – of course – “Game of the Year.”
The Last of Us Part 2 sold over four million copies worldwide, so it’s no surprise that the game managed to make such an impression within the industry. Our very own Lara Jackson described the game as an “inspiring, gut-wrenching and vicious journey” that will “keeps people talking for years to come”, which summarises the experience perfectly.
Regardless of what you think of The Last of Us Part 2, it has made its mark in the industry and is sure to go down in video game history.
