Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2 is one of the most divisive video games in history, but it’s still seen some pretty impressive sales figures despite its many controversies. In the US, it’s believed that the highly-anticipated sequel is Sony’s second-biggest launch of all time – though it’s apparently failed to steal the top spot from a certain web-slinger.

Yes, sadly it’s not quite reached the lofty heights of Sony’s current best-selling US game, which you probably have already guessed is Marvel’s Spider-Man.
According to market research firm NPD Group [via VGC], Part 2 had the second-biggest launch month ever (specifically for a Sony-published game in the US). NPD Group has claimed that Part 2 only missed out on stealing the crown from Marvel’s Spider-Man in first month dollar sales.

It’s important to note a couple of things here though. Firstly, these figures are from data analysis and not from Sony itself, so take them with a pinch of salt. It’s also important to note that The Last of Us Part 2 was available for 16 days during NPD Group’s data-collecting period, whereas Marvel’s Spider-Man was out for 30.
Could it be a simple data discrepancy, or has Ellie’s adventure failed to topple down Spidey? Hopefully we’ll hear official word from PlayStation on the matter!

Whether or not it’s the best-selling game for Sony doesn’t seem to matter too much, as it’s still smashed expectations despite suffering from a pretty hefty pre-launch leak.
The Last of Us Part 2 has become the third best-selling game of 2020 (again, this is in the US), and the eighth best-selling video game of the past 12 months. It’s also confirmed to be the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive, shifting four million copies across the world in its first three days of launch.

Guess those boycotts really worked, huh?
