It’s been revealed that Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2 is reportedly Sony’s third highest grossing game in US history.

The news comes from VG247, where it’s reported that July’s NPD report has revealed the life-to-date dollar sales of The Last of Us Part 2 are now the third-highest in Sony history. The game is only bested by Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War, both of which launched two years ago and therefore have been available for a much longer time.
It’s more than possible that we’ll see The Last of Us Part 2 surpass these titles somewhere down the line, though due to the many controversies surrounding the game and its launch, this remains to be seen.

The Last of Us Part 2 is also the third best-selling game of the year in the US, coming in just behind Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (which launched in 2019) and Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The controversial title suffered from huge plot leaks before its launch in June of this year, revealing a storyline which many considered to be damaging to the lore of the game and the history of its characters. Despite calls for boycotts (and despite general turmoil over press review scores), it seems the unstoppable force of Ellie and Joel has once again triumphed.
The news is worth celebrating for more than just that though. Having a best-selling video game featuring two female protagonists, one of whom is gay, become such an important chart-topper is phenomenal work. Hopefully the huge sales figures will prompt other game developers to choose to include more marginalised characters as heroes in their games.

Massive congratulations to everyone at Naughty Dog and Sony for The Last of Us Part 2!
