The Last Of Us Part 2 Is The UK’s ‘Fastest-Selling PS4 Game Ever’

It’s one of the most controversial video games of the year, but there’s one thing that’s not up for debate: The Last of Us Part 2 has absolutely smashed expectations when it comes to its sales figures.

According to figures from GamesIndustry.biz, Naughty Dog’s swan song of the PlayStation 4 has bested its previous PS4 hit, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (at least when it comes to physical copies within the first week of each games’ launch).

The Last of Us Part 2 has just managed to exceed the sales of Nathan Drake’s final adventure by a narrow 1%, though the as-of-yet-unrevealed download sales are expected to increase that margin even more.

Meanwhile Part 2 has outsold the original The Last of Us by a whopping 76% (again, we’re talking physical sales in the UK, during the first week of release here). It’s even gone on to beat out the previous biggest-selling game of 2020 – Animal Crossing: New Horizons – by 40%.

It’s great news for Sony and Naughty Dog, as the game was hit with a massive spoiler leak just weeks before launch. The leak, which was verified by the developers to be legitimate, cause a lot of outrage amongst players who did not support the story. This, in turn, let to gamers demanding a “boycott” of the game. Clearly, the controversy hasn’t dampened sales figures.

Now that most of the world has their hands on The Last of Us Part 2, players are still divided on its content, which honestly, is entirely the point of the story. It’s been heavily review-bombed on Metacritic, but it’s clear from the completion trophy data that the majority of players have yet to see the game through to the end.
