The Last of Us remake is not a cash grab, says developer

The Last of Us remake is not “just a cash grab” claims a developer of Naughty Dog when responding to fan criticism.

After many months of speculation, The Last of Us remake was finally announced in June 2022. Despite being rebuilt from the ground up, The Last of Us: Part 1 is pretty much a shot-for-shot recreation of the 2013 original that was released for PS3.

TLOU is a PlayStation great!

In truth, the original PS3 game still looks and plays great to this day. Furthermore, the 2014 remaster that was released for PS4 is currently the definitive way to play this Naughty Dog classic. That’s at least until the PS5 remake arrives later this year.

Based on the original iteration of The Last of Us ageing so well, some fans have questioned the need to release a third version of the game, this time for the PlayStation 5. Some fans have accused Naughty Dog of creating a “cash grab”.

However, the developer and animator of The Last of Us remake has lept to its defence. Robert Morrison says that The Last of Us: Part 1 is not “just a cash grab.

Actually it’s the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career,” tweeted Morrison. “The highest level of care and attention to detail possible.

Morrison has an impressive resume

For the record, Robert Morrison who now works at Sony’s Bend studio has a very impressive resume. He’s worked on titles such as God of War (2018), Resident Evil 7 as well as Injustice 2. So it’s fair to say that he knows what he’s talking about.

Personally, I can see why some fans are criticising the existence of The Last of Us: Part 1. However, the way I think of it is that judging by the reveal trailer, the gameplay of the remake looks to be at least to the standard of the cut-scenes from the 2014 remaster.

The Last of Us Remake arrives this year

Furthermore, the remake will also benefit from gameplay and performance tweaks as an evolution of 2020s The Last of Us: Part 2. Also, as it is being developed for PS5 and PC, it will not be hindered by PS4 limitations. That being said, we won’t truly know how good this remake will be until it releases.
