The setting for the next BioShock game might have leaked, if reports from journalist Colin Moriarty are to be believed (thanks, VGC).
Moriarty spoke about the leak during an episode of Sacred Symbols. The next BioShock game will be set in the 1960s, in a fictional Antarctic city. According to VGC, this matches what their sources have told them about the game. It’s also going to be tied to the previous games. And developer Cloud Chamber is aiming for a release next year, 2022.
Borealis is reportedly the name of the new city. “[The game is] codenamed ‘Parkside’,” says Moriarty. “Internally the game is very secret and apparently, totally locked up. Apparently the inclination there is that they understand full well that this game will be compared to what [BioShock creator] Ken Levine does.” Moriarty also noted that Take-Two will also be publishing Levine’s next game.
Work on the next BioShock has been in development since at least 2019, when 2K Games announced production had begun. Multiple members of staff who worked on previous entries in the BioShock series have returned to work on this unnamed sequel.
Jonathan Pelling, a designer on the original, is the design director. Hoagy de la Plante, who worked on various roles on the original, is creative director. And Scott Sinclair, art director of the first and Infinite, is also working on the new BioShock.
It remains to be see how the sequel will tie into the previous games. What connected BioShock Infinite to the original was a specific plot point related to Elizabeth. We can assume that ties to the original means there will be some kind of lighthouse. But past that we’ll have to wait for an official announcement.
