The second season of Netflix’s The Witcher had just begun production when actor Kristofer Hivju tested positive for coronavirus. The series stopped filming immediately, and shortly after this, lockdown happened in the UK. It’s still not known when it will resume again, though thankfully, Hivju is well again having beaten the virus.
Despite the issues, The Witcher season two could be headed to Netflix sooner than you might think – at least according to new reports. The news comes from known Witcher leaks website, Redanian Intelligence, where it’s noted that production for many halted TV series and movies is expected to pick up again in September.
As reported by Deadline, Hollywood and its many factions are hoping to get back to work as normal as soon as September, and though The Witcher isn’t specifically mentioned, it’s likely we’re looking at a similar timeframe.
Similarly, Redanian Intelligence also notes that the fiscal reports from Platige Image, the special effects company working on Netflix’s The Witcher, show that work will be happening across “all eight episodes of the second season,” with a deadline of July 2021.
The website also notes that, during the filming of season one, Platige Image’s work deadline was November 2019. The show landed on Netflix just a month later. Based on this, Redanian Intelligence predicts a Season Two release window of August 2021.
The Witcher season two was approximately one month into filming when lockdown took hold, with around 10-12 months of filming and post-production work estimated to remain. As Redanian Intelligence notes, this would line up with a July or August 2021 release date.
Though there’s absolutely no rush for projects to return to their normal schedules, I have to say I’m more than excited to see the return of Geralt, Ciri, Yen and the gang.
As always, stay safe and healthy!
