Sky and Microsoft have teamed up to build Kinect-like technology into their new all-in-one TV – Sky Glass. It’s coming to a living room near you.
The new Sky TV sounds like a lot. It’s got speakers which support high-quality sound (no soundbar needed!) it links to the internet (no dish needed!) and to Sky (no TV box needed!) and it’s got a camera in it that lets you connect to your Xbox (no Kinect needed!). It’s Kinect, but not as we know it.
As reported by the Verge, Fraser Stirling, Sky’s chief product officer, said:
“Working with Microsoft we’re also building a fantastic feature that lets us watch TV together even if we’re miles apart…It syncs your TV with other households, with integrated video and chat on-screen, and you can choose content from the biggest channels — including Premier League matches, movies, and all your favorite entertainment.”
You can watch the announcement here:
The camera will mean that people with Sky Glass can call each other and even watch TV together. In the pandemic many of us started having Zoom calls with our extended families and Netflix Party dates with potential partners. This tech will make this type of activity seamless – everything you need will be sitting across from your sofa.
According to reporting in Video Games Chronicle, the tech will also support several games including a Paw Patrol game and Fruit Ninja.
Kinect may have fallen out of favour – but perhaps our behaviour and techn needs have changed enough to make this new venture a success.
