Tomb Raider getting a new movie and TV series revival

It looks like Tomb Raider is going to become a movie and TV adaptation soon from Amazon, if recent rumours are to be believed.

Our favourite tomb-raiding archeologist, Lara Croft continues to capture audiences to this day and it appears like that is not about to stop anytime soon. It’s been revealed that Tomb Raider will be getting both a new movie and series adaptation for Amazon.

It was in April last year that fans were delighted to hear a new Tomb Raider game was in the works. Now it appears that the franchise is continuing to make the news after a report by The Hollywood Reporter alleges that a Tomb Raider TV series is happening.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be penning in the show

Amazon Prime will be the streaming service behind the adaptation with Phoebe Waller-Bridge taking the helm as its writer. She is most known for her writing and starring in her comedy drama, Fleabag as well as being a showrunner for Killing Eve. Most recently, she was a writer on the latest James Bond movie, No Time To Die.

Although Waller-Bridge is gifted in acting as well as writing, it has still not been confirmed if she will also star in the Tomb Raider series. This leaves the question as to who will take up the mantle of the next Lara Croft after Angelina Jolie in the early 00s and Alicia Vikander in 2018.

A Tomb Raider movie is also on the cards

It was also revealed that Amazon will be “building a Tomb Raider franchise” by producing a movie as well as a TV show and at least one video game. With the goal to “build out a connected world of Tomb Raider, with the video game, TV series and film all interconnected in a fashion akin to what Marvel has”, it’s clear that Amazon has a lot of ambition for the franchise.

Netflix is also jumping on the hype train

This news comes after it was revealed in 2021 that Tomb Raider would be getting a Netflix series in an anime-style. Set to follow the events of the recent reboot trilogy, the show will star Hayley Atwell (best known for playing Peggy Carter in the Marvel universe) as the voice of Lara Croft. Although this adaptation has no set date, it is expected to be released some time this year.
