Tunic, the Microsoft-exclusive indie game from Finji, has been review bombed due to similarities to The Legend of Zelda series.
It’s safe to say that The Legend of Zelda is one of the most influential games ever made. Without it, we wouldn’t have games like Okami, Dark Souls, and Hyper Light Drifter.
The most recent addition to the line of Zelda-inspired games, is quite clearly the adorable but tough Tunic. One look at Tunic and you can tell that it is very much inspired by the SNES era of Zelda games. The little fox is literally wearing a little green tunic (get it?), and its shield looks fairly familiar too.
But now, as spotted by Gamerant, it seems that the PC version of the game has been review bombed on Metacritic just for it’s similarities to Zelda games.
At the time of publication for Gamerant, Tunic’s user score sat at 5.7, though it has gone up since then. But the game does have 40 negative reviews, with a number of complaints being about how it’s a “ripoff,” of Zelda games. The same user who called it a ripoff of Zelda also said it was a ripoff of Dark Souls. This is in spite of the fact that Tunic is not at all a Souls game.
Another user also made the Dark Souls comparison, but it just isn’t what Tunic is. The two aspects of Tunic you can find in a Souls game is that there’s a sort of similar bonfire system. And that the game is slightly hard. But those two things do not make a Souls game. Tunic is now sitting with a user score of 7.6, so thankfully the criticisms aren’t hitting it too hard. But it also shows how Metacritic is not necessarily a platform to be trusted.
