During the run-up to a game release it’s unfortunately pretty common for a physical copy to end up on store shelves before it’s supposed to. Although this has been known to happen, it’s usually on such a small scale that it doesn’t make too much of a difference, especially if it’s a just a couple of copies limited to just one area.
Unfortunately, a seemingly much-more damaging incident may have tarnished the launch of the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as a social media user has reportedly been trying to sell early copies of the game at an eye-watering $250 USD price point.
Using the alias “VonGarcon” [via Dexerto], the mysterious person claimed to have multiple copies of the upcoming game, which isn’t due to launch officially until October 25.
Over on Instagram, VonGarcon shared an image of their many copies of the game adding the caption: “$250 per copy. Von is the plug now.”
It seems that not only did VonGarcon have at least seven copies of the game, but that they also managed to sell them all.
The user took to Twitter to write: “I am not selling any copies of Modern Warfare. I have 0 copies. People bought the few I had.”
As the story of VonGarcon and their early copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare heated up, the user removed the posts regarding the copies from social media, leaving only the above tweet.
Whether or not VonGarcon actually had genuine discs for the game, or if they were just pulling some elaborate hoax remains to be seen, but Activision hasn’t commented on the situation.
Maybe one of the supposed buyers will surface online to continue this story…
For the rest of the world, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on October 25.
