Ubisoft Is Deciding Whether Or Not To Raise The Price Of Its Games

Ubisoft is reportedly still currently undecided as to whether or not it might bump up the price of new-gen games to $70/£70.

With the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the prices of some new-gen video games were increased. PS5 exclusive games such as Demon’s Souls and Destruction AllStars carry an RRP of $70/£70.

However the price hike may not be exclusive to first-party titles, because third-party publishers such as Activision and EA have already hinted that they may increase prices of new-gen games, and it seems that Ubisoft is considering taking the same action too.

During a Q3 earnings call this week [via VGC], Ubisoft was asked if it has any plans to increase the prices of its AAA games, which would include the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Watch Dogs.

The question of the price hike would see the $70 price point increased during the next fiscal year which runs from April 2021 to March 2022.

In terms of pricing, we’ve been analysing the competitive dynamics of the past quarter and we are still looking at new opportunities, but we have not made any decision yet,” said chief financial officer Frédérick Duguet.

At the time of writing, most new AAA Ubisoft titles have an RRP of $60/£60 and I know there’s an argument to be made with inflation, but to bump up the price by a further $10/£10 would likely prove very unpopular.

The price hike might cause added frustration when you consider the fact that many Ubisoft titles are heavily monetised and if Ubisoft did bump up its prices, it perhaps wouldn’t agitate as many gamers if there weren’t so many microtransactions implemented into its games.

Just recently Ubisoft caused a stir with gamers when it was discovered that Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla now has as many digital armour sets that you can buy with real money as you can earn via gameplay.
