Are you still trying to decide between the Xbox Series X and PS5? Well, this latest discovery regarding both consoles and their 4K Blu-ray drives might sway you.
According to the YouTube channel HDTVTest, the PS5 has a better 4K Blu-ray experience than that provided by Microsoft’s latest console [via PSU]. This is perhaps to be expected, especially since Sony is the one who developed the Blu-ray format. That being said, the PS4 completely neglected 4K Blu-ray compatibility, something that was an adopted feature of the Xbox One S/X.
So, how exactly does the PS5 manage to trump the Series X’s Blu-ray playback? Well, it all boils down to things like the PS5’s drive having more bandwidth and a higher output bit rate. The video goes to technical lengths to explain the differences but does so using various screen comparisons. Check it out above.
The experiment was conducted using two high-end LG OLED TVs, making it easier to spot any performance differences. Through this, HDTVTest was able to demonstrate how the Series X skips frames when skipping chapters, as well as how it mishandles Blu-rays that run at 24 FPS. These Blu-rays would stutter every 42 seconds, something that’s sure to irritate cinema purists.
Whether these discoveries will actually affect player preference is yet to be seen, especially since both companies are pushing for a diskless future. That being said, there are no doubt numerous movie lovers out there who are buying a new console for film playback. This is especially true since 4K Blu-ray players frequently cost between £100-200, meaning you’re better off consolidating your set up with a new-gen console.
