During Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Nate and Sully will end up inside a clock bell tower in Madagascar during Chapter 11 ‘Hidden In Plain Sight’. Not only are you tasked with scaling this impressive structure, but you’ll also need to solve a puzzle involving the many bells located inside this tower.
This is just one of many puzzles included throughout the game, but is ultimately a pretty complicated puzzle on the surface of things. Nonetheless, here’s our guide of how to solve the bell tower puzzle in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
HOW TO START THE BELL TOWER PUZZLE IN UNCHARTED 4
First of all, when you’re on the ground floor of the clock tower you’ll see a compass on the floor in the middle of the room. Examine it and Nate will add new drawings to his notebook. Open the notebook and take a look at the drawings. This is the first step to solving the bell tower puzzle.
However, you won’t need to use these clues just yet. The bells are located towards the top of the tower so you’ll need to do some climbing first. Head up the spiral stairs and find a grappling hook point to hoist yourself up to the next floor. Keep following the path laid out for you as you ascend the tower. Keep a watchful eye for your next handhold or platform to jump to, as each ledge is carefully marked for you in such a way that it should be easy to make your way to the top.
Eventually, you’ll come to the areas with the bells. This is where the rest of the puzzle remains. You basically need to ring the bells in the correct order, with that specific order corresponding to the symbols in Nate’s notebook. Some parkour is required between each bells.
That’s what you need to know about solving the bell tower puzzle. If you want to know the solution, check it out below.
HOW TO SOLVE THE BELL TOWER PUZZLE IN UNCHARTED 4
The bells in the clock tower need to be rung in a specific order. You can ring them using a crank that’s located near the bells themselves. Here’s the order you should be ringing the clock tower bells:
- Scorpio (symbol of a scorpion)
- Aquarius (symbol of a person kneeling)
- Leo (symbol of a lion)
- Taurus (symbol of a bull)
To begin with, ignore the Leo bell which is located towards the bottom of the puzzle and head up a set of cogs until you reach the Scorpio bell represented by a scorpion symbol on the wall. Ring that bell by interacting with the crank.
Next, drop down to the floor below you to find the Aquarius bell and interact with the crank there. After that you need to ring the Leo bell, which you can reach by timing a jump through the nearby moving gear to reach a pendulum. This pendulum will start to fall under your weight, so you need to jump off it back onto the ledge and then jump back when it’s on its way up. This way, you can use the momentum of it moving upwards to propel yourself to the ledge above. Ring the Leo bell here.
Finally, the Taurus bell is located above you. You need to climb up some moving gears until you reach a swinging pendulum. Climb to the otherside of it and you can reach the Taurus bell platform.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
That’s all four bells rung, and Sully will comment on it unlocking the door at the bottom. However, you still need to open the door itself, which requires moving up towards the very top of the tower and ringing the big bell. Head up the stairs that have revealed themselves.
Upstairs, there’s a giant moving cog that’s moving too fast for you to climb up normally. Instead, climb the nearby pillar and pull the lever down by hanging from it. You’ll cause the cog to momentarily stop moving. Quickly now, climb the cog all the way to the top and jump onto the ledge before it starts spinning again.
Next you’ll climb around the exterior of the tower. Make yourself around the building by heading to the right, onto the clock face. You’ll realise you need to move the clock hand so it levels out and you can grapple across. So head back inside the tower and jump on the inverse of the clock hand just to the left of the opening until it’s more even.
Now you can go outside and make your way across to swing around and head up to the top of the ledge. Follow the path and head back inside where you can pull the crank that controls the big bell.
The crank will break halfway through though, leaving you to do this the ol’ fashioned way. Look at the inside of the bell to see a bar you can swing from. Jump across to it and start swinging, then strap yourself in for a wild descent to the bottom.
And that’s how you solve the clock bell tower puzzle in Uncharted 4. Be sure to check out some of our other guides in Uncharted 4, including how to solve the Founders Wheel puzzle which comes after this sequence.
